Fun start!

I started this fun new painting Wednesday while I was working at The ARThouse Gallery in Glen Ellen, California. It's a 28" square canvas that I built myself. Stay tuned for the process in progress...

"Late Afternoon Light"

    I brought a small prelimenary oil sketch back to my studio from the gallery in Napa a couple of months ago and wasn't sure what to paint over it to try and use the small panoramic shape to good advantage.
    I ended up choosing this late afternoon view of an old cattle ranch that's out on the Sonoma coast just east of Highway #1 about halfway between Jenner and Bodega Bay.
                                It's titled: "Late Afternoon Light" - oil on canvas - 8" x 20" - 2012.

Patience & Persistance

       A lot of my painting experience is about patience and persistance. As I apply more and more strokes and daubs of these pigments that I mix with a mixture of various oils and solvent, I have a vision , not just of the final image I believe will result from all these actions but of the process that will inevitably bring me there if I am patient and persistant in my work.
       Many more hours of painting lie ahead to bring this somewhat complex composition of Sonoma Creek into focus.

More time & paint...

Another three hour session of painting has brought us to this juncture. I really enjoy watching a picture like this one as it progresses. It begins to take on a life of it's own as the pigments and strokes accumulate. I'm using a full sheet (8 1/2" x 11") paper print of the photo I took a few weeks back on a walk along Warm Springs Road near Kenwood, California as my reference.

Sonoma Creek taking shape.

A few more hours of painting today have advanced the image of Sonoma Creek that I started a couple of days ago. I like where this one is going.

More Paint...

Another two hour painting session has brought it to this state. As I fill in the blank spaces with color, the various elements start becoming identifiable. Wood, Rock, Leaf, Water...

Starting Sonoma Creek

         I began doing a new painting yesterday of Sonoma Creek just off Warm Springs Road near Kenwood. This is the results of the first two hour session of painting. The canvas is a 24" x 36" that I built myself.

Waialua Beach Coconuts

Aloha Ohana, It's been awhile since I posted something on here so I thought it was time to check in.

I went to Molokai recently to finish a large double portrait and that was accomplished, but the weather prevented me from doing any plein air painting so I was only able to finish up this small panel that I started on the last visit here. It was done on the beach near the mouth of the Waialua Stream. This painting titled "Waialua Beach Coconuts" measures 16"x12", is oil on archival canvas/wood panel, Copyrights - Timothy David Dixon - 2011.

Waialua Beach. Moloka'i

This was the fifth plein air oil painting I did on the last trip. Done the day before I left to come back to the mainland, it was still too wet to travel so I left it there with a friend to hold for me. I'm returning to finish a double portrait and do some more plein air painting at the end of November. Aloha

New 9'6" Mike Doyle Longboard

I decided that every day is precious and that life is to be enjoyed. Then..I decided to quit procrastinating about getting back into good physical shape. I decided that I want to surf again. I'm starting to work out on an excersize bench and I'm going to start paddling around around flat water for awhile before I take it out into the surf. I need to regain about 10 or 12 lbs of muscle, mass, but the longest journey must begin with the first step. I'll keep you informed as to my progress in this regard.

"Enterprise Vines"

I worked on this little (12" x 16")painting again today..it's almost finished..I signed it and took this photo of it..then decided to update the blog. Then after I started I realized ,looking at the picture, that there was a bit more to do. Put some shine on the grapeleaves. The difference will be subtle, but you'll notice the difference. So more on this one later.

Enterprise Vineyard

I made some progress on this little vineyard painting today, but didn't have time to finish it.

Enterprise Road Vineyard

I began a new oil painting of a vineyard up on Enterprise Road yesterday. The view is toward Mount Veeder in the Mayacamas Mountains that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley.
It's a small size canvas : 12" x 16". I'll try to finish it today and show another update later.
