Kalalau Overlook

I painted this manufactured 18" x 24"canvas panel from a photo that my friend Rick had taken sometime before we arrived, of the gorgeous view looking down through the Kalalau Valley to the Pacific Ocean. I did it in a direct ala prima plein air style even though my reference was a photoprint. I did this painting in about 5 hours.

More Detail

     I was back to painting on "Waialua Stream #1" today...Subtle changes, but apparent when you get a bit closer to the actual painting. Details mostly and slight changes in hues here and there. I added quite a bit more detail to the Cattle Egret so that it would hold up to a somewhat closer inspection. Maui became slightly larger and more distinct. More glints of reflected lights in the grasses suggesting moisture...Perhaps the recent passing of a gentle "Ua".
     I think I'm going to call it done again and move on to another project that requires my attention.

Well...I thought it was done.

Aloha Ohana, Added a pair of Nene Geese and a Cattle Egret to Waialua Stream #1 and now I think I'm going to work on the sky and the rainbow some more. Check in later for another update on this painting.

Waialua Stream #1 final

I finished the painting called "Waialua Stream #1" (Oil on Canvas - 30"x48") today. I'm very satisfied with the final composition.

Leaves & Blossoms

       Today's painting was mostly about Plumeria leaves. And a bit on the Hibiscus blossoms. It is progressing a bit every day now. It's good to have enough energy to paint for a few hours at a time now. My strength & stamina are returning a bit more each day that passes. Mahalo Akua! Aloha, Timo

Adding in Plumeria

     I started painting a group of Plumeria flowers into Waialua Stream #1 today and then stopped to work on the Ocean and then added a very small (to stay in scale) female surfer in trim on a wave off the mouth. Still plenty more to do...

Artist's License

   I added the boles of 2 coconut palms to the left side of the Waialua stream painting last night. They aren't really there in the scene, but then neither are the Hibiscus. This painting is a composition of some of my favorite elements of the tropical landscape.
   My artist's license allows me to create a picture any way I like...So I do! These 2 trees really added a great point of perspective to the distance between Maui 8 miles away and the viewer. I like it.

Coming along...

This morning's update of the new painting I'm working on that is tentatively titled 'Waialua Stream #1'. Yesterday's session brought it to this stage. Ultramarine Blue was added to the palette as I began rendering the colors of the sky that are being reflected from the surface of the placid stream near it's mouth into the lagoon. Maui is coming into focus across the Pailolo Channel with it's usual cover of afternoon rainclouds in attendance. It's starting to get exciting as I rough in more of the colors of the scene that I'm building with the paint. Well...Time to get back to work.

Waialua Stream progress

     Aloha, Here's the progress on Waialua Stream #1 so far as of today May 6, 2012. I did work late last night, but layed a fair amount of paint. The color at the bottom of this is underpainting that will get mostly covered over by the colors that will follow. The pigments introduced into this long session of painting were: Cadmium red light, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Lemon Yellow, Raw Sienna, Sap Green, Windsor Green- Yellow Shade, Pthalocyanine Blue and Alizerine Purple. Waialua Stream painting

     Aloha, Pehea oe? I've started a new painting of the stream at Waialua, Moloka'i as a basic reference for the composition. I'm adding a few other elements that will tranform it to a magical, tropical window onto paradise. At least that is my intention. This photo taken on May 5th, 2012 represents the progress attained after completing 3 sessions at the easle. The canvas is a 30" x 48" built by me. It was prepared by applying 3 coats of acrylic gesso with a 3" bristle brush, sanded after each coat. The pigments used so far are: Titanium White, Cobalt blue and Quinacridone Magenta.

A bit more on Moki

The painting of Moki Kau is coming along as I add more color. I've been working on his skin tones so he's starting to appear more realistic as it progresses. Remember that my reference for this is an old black & white 8"x10" glossy print done in around 1965. It's fun to do a color interpretation though. It makes me use my mind a bit more I think.

The Finished Portrait of Eddie & Vina Tanaka

I finally finished this portrait of my friends Eddie & Vina Tanaka who live at Honouliwai, Molokai in the Hawaiian Island chain. Many hours of painting, but I'm happy with the results. Mahalo ke Akua! Aloha!

Waialua Beach Coconuts

Aloha Ohana, It's been awhile since I posted something on here so I thought it was time to check in.

I went to Molokai recently to finish a large double portrait and that was accomplished, but the weather prevented me from doing any plein air painting so I was only able to finish up this small panel that I started on the last visit here. It was done on the beach near the mouth of the Waialua Stream. This painting titled "Waialua Beach Coconuts" measures 16"x12", is oil on archival canvas/wood panel, Copyrights - Timothy David Dixon - 2011.

Waialua Beach. Moloka'i

This was the fifth plein air oil painting I did on the last trip. Done the day before I left to come back to the mainland, it was still too wet to travel so I left it there with a friend to hold for me. I'm returning to finish a double portrait and do some more plein air painting at the end of November. Aloha

Flame Ginger & Heliconia

This was the 4th oil painting that happened on the last trip to Moloka'i in August of this year. These huge blossoms were in a vase on the table at the Waialua Beachhouse and I just couldn't resist trying to capture some of that incredible color. The background went through some changes and I'm still planning to paint on it some more, believe it or not. I'll show that when it happens.
