Getting Focus
A bit more paint has worked it's way onto the canvas of the Indonesian cockfighter commission that I'm doing for my friend Martin. I've had a lot going on through the "Holidaze" this season...So I'm just a little behind schedule for having this one completed, but it won't take much longer to finish it when I can focus on it once again.
I think it's going to be a great piece of art when it's finished.
Mahalo for visiting my blog!

Coming along...
I've been busy with other things lately, but have managed to put in a few hours at the easle on the Indonesian cockfighter. I'm still drawing with thin paint to get the proportions correct. My canvas is a slightly different shape of rectangle than the reference photo...So the composition is tighter to the sides.
The colors will change considerably as I progress.
Mahalo for stopping in.
Aloha a Mele Kalikimaka Aikane a Ohana.

Cockfighter start
I started the painting of the Indonesian cockfighter yesterday and was able to get this much done so far. Toned the canvas with Raw Sienna mixed with Burnt Sienna and then sketched it in with a small long-handled flat bristle brush in Burnt Sienna And a bit of Burnt Umber...Scrubbed out the light area of the hibiscus with a touch of the medium o the same brush then dabbed it with a rag to remove some pigment. I'm still moving things around a bit at this point to try to get it all in proportion.
Mahalo for checking in today.

The Reference
This old photograph of an Indonesian cockfighter will be the reference for the painting that will start today on the new canvas that just needs it's final sanding to be ready to paint on.

Finished Portrait of Art
I finished this portrait of my friend Tommy's brother-in-law Art yesterday. It's not a very good photo of it though...I'm not sure why the camera didn't want to focus on it. I tried twice with equally bad results both times. Mahalo for stopping by.

Coming Along
Another couple of painting sessions have brought the new portrait to this stage of completion. The backlit vineyard view toward Sonoma Mountain is certainly adding a lot to this painting as it developes.

A new portrait in progress
I recently started painting a small (18"x14") posthumous portrait of a good friend's deceased brother-in-law from a family group photo that was furnished to me as a reference. Several sessions have yielded this progress. The background will be a local vineyard scene as he worked in the wine/grape industry in Sonoma Valley for many years.

A bit more on Moki

The painting of Moki Kau is coming along as I add more color. I've been working on his skin tones so he's starting to appear more realistic as it progresses. Remember that my reference for this is an old black & white 8"x10" glossy print done in around 1965. It's fun to do a color interpretation though. It makes me use my mind a bit more I think.

New project

I began a new project recently for an old friend, that will be a painting of an old guy named Moki Kau from a black and white photograph that he took when he was living in Lahaina, Maui in the early sixties. I've had an 8x10 print of it that he traded to me way back then, but he's since misplaced the negative of it and decided to have me do this colored rendition to hang in the Waialua beach house on Molokai. I'm going to start filling in the scene around him today. He was sitting in front of the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina when my friend took this shot of him.
Mahalo for checking in.

Jenna complete
I finished the portrait of Jenna today. It's good to be painting again, but I have a lot of catching up to do. I'll be glad when it stops raining again. I miss the SUN! This is strange weather for June to say the least.

Progress on portrait of Jenna
I made some progress yesterday on this portrait of my friend's niece that chose to end her own life last year...Tragic thing to have to live with for the people who loved her. I began this painting at the beginning of December(2010) and am just now feeling well enough to paint in short sessions. Progress is good! I'll see how much I can get done today.

Back to Painting on Earth
I've began to paint again. My first strokes of color went onto this painting of Crazy Horse that I call "Earth Man". I haven't had the energy to paint since the middle of December 2010. This is a good sign! Mahalo Akua! This painting is now declared officially done. "Earth Man" oil on canvas 20" x 16" 2010-2011
